Dr.Peter Lapine and his speech and language students arrived the first of November stayed 7 days working with 8 children and their parents , which they had been working with each of these children via telemedicine with the Angelnotion clinic. This gave them a chance to work directly with the children and family ultimatly improving their speech abilities and understanding in some cases other forms of communications. The students donated a Wii in which we will continue to use in the clinic for speech therapy and other physical therapies!

Alexia experiencing difficutly, her surgery was very challenging as per Dr. Rick Smith. Alexia actually aspirated and began to have breathing complications she was rushed off to SPARROW Childrens hospital intensive care center and is now ... is in excellent hands her health is improving her breathing tube will be removed tomorow saturday! Pray for alexias fast recovery.

Today was a day with some problems, although by the time the dinner was served at Applebees, it was the end of a very good day. At 4:20 a.m. Alexia was having trouble breathing, so the doctors decided she needed to have a breathing tube put in place. Once that was done she was transferred by ambulance to Sparrow Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. By the afternoon, her lungs were clear, her heart strong and we were all relieved that she was doing so much better. Alexia's mother, Marciela, says that Alexia is "deaf," but accurate records of her previous hearing tests are not complte. We are hoping that Alexia is discharged soon. Dr. Jill Elfenbein from MSU has agreed to do a complete hearing evaluation so the true meaure of her hearing can be obtained. The good news, as can be seen in our pictures, is that Jose has been discharged from Ingham Regional Medical Center. We are happy to report that he is "just fine." He is lively, active and busy. Moisies had his post-op visit with Dr. Rick Smith today, too. He can begin to remove the bandages. Dr. Gabe is very helpful to each of the patients.Thursday Lavonna and Dr. Gabe will be at MSU to visit a graduate class, and to participate in some planning meetings for reserach that is being done by MSU faculty in the Nicte Ha clinic. Of course, everyone will go to the PICU at Sparrow to visit Alexia!

We arrived at Dr. Rick Smith's office this morning at 7:30 a.m. He and his staff were ready to go! The day will be filled with excitement and emotion. We will leave for Ingham Regional Medical Center at 10:30 to begin the preparation for the surgeries Alexia's procedure will be at 1:00 p.m. and Jose's at 2:30 p.m.

It's Official! The Dates are set for the surgeries
We have worked with Cheryl in Dr. Rick J. Smith's office to finalize the details for scheduling the dates of the surgeries. As of today, Dr. Smith will do the surgeries on Jose and Alexia's hard palates at Ingham Regional Medical Center (IRMC). IRMC has agreed to waive the fees associated with the surgeries. The travel arrangements are being finalized now so we anticipate that the group from Mexico will arrive on Saturday, October 18th. Both children will see Dr. Smith for pre-operative visits on Monday morning and the surgeries will be performed on Monday afternoon. That will allow for a full week of healing before they return to Mexico on October 28th.A very special thank you is extended to Mr. Steve Wickens, father of Victoria and Gabrielle. Mr. Wickens is providing the lodging for the everyone from Mexico, so the lodging is provided for Jose and Alexia and their mothers, and their translator and the President of Angel Notion Lavonna Redman, and Dr. Gabrielle Ayala Velazquez, the medical director for Angel Notion. We're excited to watch the next week as it develops!

Our club for diabetes is every Friday where we check each pacients sugar levels and compare them with the previous week, we have talks about nutrician and excersize encouranging those with diabetes to change what they are doing so that we dont have to see them with amputations, blindness, kidney disease and other medical problems that can be prevented. Our club serves between 20 and 60 people who need more education in preventing their diganosis of diabetes!

Lauren Lapine: The daughter of Dr.Peter Lapine(my hero!) has found one of her passions, she was involved in MSUs 2008 mission with Angelnotion and has chosen 3 children to help with plastic surgery. The surgeries have been scheduled for the end of October 2008. Lauren has involved her High school, her community of E. Lansing Michigan, her father Dr. Peter Lapine, Dr. Rick smith,plastic surgeon, a Senator, The sheraton hotel and many other in her community to support her in the success of this mission.

Alexia age 3 with cleft lip palet, she is what they think complety deaf and is a very smart little girl as she uses sign language to communicate her needs and feelings, her parents a totally involved with her growth and medical care.

Every Tuesday and Thursday we attend to 5 young ladies who are expecting their first child. Our program includes medical attention to assure healthy babies, group talks about birthing techniques, special attention for each expected mother. Each expecting mother receives a celebration of a baby shower in the clinc before they give birth. We have two new healthy babies from the results of this new program. The comments we are getting is that in the other centers is the doctors arent giving them the attention that they need or desire. One of the expecting mothers even said , her doctor hasnt ever looked her in the eye.. ever. In our clinic we feel its important to show love and good attention that they deserve and the results will be proven in the child that they bare.

Freddys surgery was a success however we still have to wait a few days, we met with Dr. Rios Gariby and Dr. Baltazar Martinez Navarrete this morning to receive the great news of Freddys Kidney transplant. This was the first kidney transplant to be realized in the State of Quintana Roo and definatly not the last. Freddys healing has started, he is very excited to start his life over. He is very thankful to his father who donated his kidney. Don Carmen freddys father is doing well and we expect him to be released from the hospital today or tomorow.

My Name is Freddy Antonio Tah Cih. I’m 21 years old.

Eight months ago I was rushed into the emergency room in Cancun, Mexico where the medical professionals diagnosed me with terminal kidney disease (which means my life depends on my receiving a kidney transplant). The first step that has been taken is a compatibility exam to see if my father can be my kidney donor. Thankfully, he is the perfect match. The next step is a kidney transplant. The surgery will cost 500,000.00 Pesos (50,000.00 US Dollars). In Mexico, all medical costs are required up front, no exceptions allowed.

Dr. Luis David Suarez, the Medical Director of Angel Notion, the incredible organization that has been helping me (www.angelnotion.org), has contacted a team of doctors who are currently in the process of implementing a transplant division for the Ameri-Med Hospital in Cancun, Mexico. Hot, hot, hot, must escape from the scorching rays of sun, I thought to myself as I got out of the taxi and power walk inside. Aged white walls entered my vision when I stepped inside, not really thinking about what I was getting myself into.

I’m in the Teenagers Abroad program, and part of the commitment was to volunteer at a local hospital. On my first day there, when I heard our assignment of the day, I’ll admit I groaned a little bit. But nonetheless I went out with the rest of the girls, handing out fliers in the surrounding area.

What I saw regrettably surpassed anything I’d ever seen. Such sadness could be felt throughout the neighborhood. Stray dogs ran loose across the dirt ridden ground, where only a few brave blades of grass could peak through, and the earth was used as a wastebasket. In contrast to my suburban neighborhood, the homes were devastating; some of the people were living basically under a tin roof with only a few sticks supporting it up. It broke my heart to see this, especially since at home, my life is filled with things that some of these people can only dream about. It’s strange to think that people can live like this when only a few blocks away there are other people paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a night for a condo or resort. But I digress; I handed out fliers, using the limited Spanish I’ve learned to help them best I could, by informing them of the Angel notion clinic, and honestly a lot of them seemed grateful. There was a shop owner who told me a story about her daughter who was having a difficult pregnancy, and how she was eternally grateful for our flyer and our willingness to help. I came back to the hospital blistered, sweaty, and dehydrated, but at the same time none of that mattered because I knew I made a difference in someone’s life, even if it’s not world changing, it still gave me a fantastic feeling. That was only day one.

On one occasion, we did touch ups around the hospital by painting over decaying spots on the wall, and at first it didn’t seem to make a difference, just an odd job. But when the paint dried, the walls were like new, for lack of better words. And it truly spruced up the appearance of the hospital, making it look more welcoming and warm.

On another occasion, as we were waiting for our assignments, I saw a little boy and his mother. The little boy couldn’t have been more then five years old, with beautifully bright and curious brown eyes. As his mother was talking to the receptionist, we had fun playing a peek-a-boo game, and as he waved good-bye to me, I waved back feeling satisfied.

This clinic hospital is a fantastic place, located where money is scarce and all help is greatly appreciated. Volunteering here was an unexpected experience that broadened my perspective of life.

oportunidad de vida a niño de dos años de edad

Angel Alberto López Pérez, de dos años de edad y que padece un problema que se conoce como “soplo en el corazón”, fue apadrinado por Román Quian Alcocer, presidente municipal de Solidaridad. Al pequeño se le practicará una cirugía a corazón abierto en junio próximo.

Esta es una oportunidad de vida para Angel Alberto, pues en otras circunstancias difícilmente pudiera ser sometido a una intervención de este tipo, pues en el extranjero una cirugía de este nivel tiene un alto costo; sin embargo, con la intervención programada para junio que será en Mérida, Yucatán, tendrá un costo menor incluyendo viáticos, diagnósticos y cirugía.

Así se dio a conocer este día, durante una visita que realizó el Presidente Román Quian Alcocer a la clínica Angel Notion, Ayuda de los Ángeles A.C., que se encuentra en la colonia Nicte Há. Esta asociación ha promovido 15 intervenciones a corazón abierto desde el año 2007 hasta el momento.

Uno de los compromisos prioritarios del gobierno de Solidaridad es la salud y el cuidado de los niños del municipio y como muestra de ello fue la visita del primer Edil a este centro de medicina alternativa. Román Quian Alcocer conoció los proyectos que le fueron presentados por la presidenta de la asociación Lavonna Redman.

Los programas, según se informó, permite atender la problemática de la drogadicción, terapia y desintoxicación a través de acupuntura; otros son programas de control contra el dengue hemorrágico, para el establecimiento de un centro de capacitación de terapeutas certificados en tratamiento de la diabetes.

Se le solicitó al Edil apoyo para ampliar las instalaciones y para poner en marcha las especialidades en Ginecología, Obstetricia, Pediatría, análisis clínicos, entre otros.

Ya se cuenta con la donación de consultorio de urgencias, sala de urgencias con dos camas pediátricas, dos camas de adulto, así como una incubadora, aparatos de quirófano, sala de expulsión y partos en agua y área de recuperación, laboratorio, banco de sangre y rayos “X”.

Angel Notion has become a huge success with all of my dedication to the project.We have been planning a small hospital and as of today we have been approval from the city and state as we are going to build a medical center out side the Centro Medicina alternative (our current clinic). This center will include maternity, pediatric and adult ICU, emergency center. We will have triage area with a surgery operating room 3 Ped Icu beds and 3 adult Icu beds, we plan on have various options for birthing an obgyn area for prevention all the way thru birth.(and area to take care of our heart kids too)Drs. Beatrice Gutierrez and Dr. Sergio Menovich will head the project. In the current Nic te ha clinic we are moving forward to provide care for adults and children on a daily basis and care for long term issues, we now have a diabetes club in the clinic serving 40 people every Friday testing and educating diabetes patients, The diabetes club in Cozumel assisting over 250 people every Saturday. We now have a local doctor provided by the city who is starting the pediatric prevention program, we will see if we get state funding for a dengue prevention program and 2 other programs which is psychology on wheels, who will go into the outlying communities and stay for 1 week at a time helping women men and children with their psychological issues as well as a protection for women (men and children against violence.)
The clinic Nic te ha continues with volunteer Medical doctors and therapist NOW OVER 5 YEARS RUNNING WE HAVE ASSISTED OVER 100K PEOPLE from the States of Quintana Roo (Riviera Maya), Yucatan and Campeche. MSU, Dr. Peter Lapine and I now working together 7 years will continue in the 2nd MSU Maya summit where we will propose these projects to the different departments at MSU for research grants and funding sources for the included programs: telemedicine (speech path program, diabetes and dengue, prenatal prevention, Ipod education, water, mangrove and coral reef conservation. We have a team of 6 people who represent different organizations thru out México and propose their project for angel notions clinics and the state of Quintana Roo.

We continue to make progress in the cardio program(Fixing broken hearts), Having saved over 120 children’s life since 1999, we are now reaching our goals of completing open heart surgeries in Merida Mexico at Star Medica. Dr, Kirk and his wife Kim Milhoan came to evaluate the hospital last month, and all was approved for Catherizations, we were successful just two weeks ago in 4 Catherizations and completed heart surgery on 2 down syndrome kids. TOTAL SUCCESS! We plan to have Open heart surgeries in just a matter of a month with Dr.Jorge Salazar Returning to complete that mission IN MEXICO. This is huge for our organization as we now will have many more options. We are now focused on putting together our Mexico Team so we have pediatric cardiologist, profusionsist and pediatric anesthesiologist creating the future for our new cardio center. We currently have 8 children on the waiting list (waiting for funds 13,500 per child) and 70 children on the external list for urgent open heart surgeries.

The cardio mission in merida was an absolute success, we were able to complete 4 catherizations and 2 surgeries. Making plans for June 6th to complete 2 open heart surgeries with the team at Star medica in Merida Yucatan.

I want the world to be aware of others doing good for others, you to can easily participate, if you look at this blogger, you will notice I am NEVER alone in thes project, it takes families of people to assit those in need, it takes teams of people who love to give, I say why not? Its such a blessing to help those with those little things that they just cant seem to afford.(for example a roof, or a wheelchair ramp, saving a childs life, and or giving a grandma or grandpa food for a month) Recogonize, Realize and make a difference! This is the kind of work we do year round, I personally invite you to make a difference with our organization.

First of all, we hope that everyone is doing well and off to a great start to the 2008 year! Coming into 2008, our family has had a great deal to be thankful for, with our health and happiness at the top of the list. When thinking of how blessed we truly are, we decided that we should and can take the time to help someone that is less fortunate. Knowing that we are coming out of the giving season that is Christmas, we understand that you may already have charities that you are associated with. However, if you are like us, you may want to give, but you may not always feel comfortable or confident that what you are giving is actually going to those truly in need. We can certainly give you that confidence with a very unique opportunity to assist a family really in need.

Our family is fortunate enough to be traveling to the Riviera Maya for vacation in the middle of March. Although this is a beautiful area, outside of the resorts and restaurants, there is a great deal of extreme poverty. With some close reliable friends living in the area, we have been researching the opportunity (and I do mean opportunity) to make a difference in the lives of one family that is not only in need, but a family that is trying to give their children what they need through hard work. Working with local friends and The Angel Notion in Playa del Carmen, we have found just that family.

Lupe and Carlos Chi Reyes have a son, Carlitos 9, a daughter Carla 6 and a baby boy that was just delivered this week. They also have their elderly parents living with them now. Their son Carlitos received the first open-heart surgery that the Angel Notion provided. After several other surgeries resulting in a deprivation of oxygen, Carlitos now struggles with severe mental challenges. Carla was diagnosed at 2 as mentally handicapped. Without money for simple physiological needs, special education is not even an option. Lupe stays at home with the children and tries to educate them as best as she can, while Carlos works full time as a waiter, doing all he can to provide for the family. Other than the obvious, they need help with some home repairs that will not be completed without assistance. Much of their roof and front door is deteriorated to the point that with the rains and wind, this is not a secure area for anyone, but especially for young children. Working with friends, we have the total cost of home repairs down to $2,000.

We are asking anyone that feels compelled to assist in changing the lives of three young children to please donate at your discretion. We can promise you that your contribution will go 100% to the family. We will oversee the roof being added to the house, and personally buy the needed baby items for the family. Our goal is to raise $2,500. Again, if you give in other ways, or do not feel compelled to participate in this particular charity event, please do not feel obligated. This hearing aid mission is serving 223 children and adults in the state of quintana roo , Fred Rondeau came into playa in January and assisted us in making molds for all our patients, we are scheduled to give the gift of sound on the 13th of Febuary 2008.

Giving the gift of sounds is an amazing gift to be able to give if you can image a child never being able to hear just because of his families finances, you give a child a hearing aid and they begin to react, respond and live for the first time. The elders we give to want to hear the conversations of the family discussion, they desire to hear a bird chirp again, its really the little things in life that we recogonize when we are able to give these gifts. Christmas was amazing !!!! Angelnotion and the Bomberos had 10 points of collection, blue parrot hotel, Noahs zoo, Ciao Gelato 1 and 2, pg sports bar, the city building, lavagabunda, the fire house and angelnotion clinic we ended up with over 30k toys and sponsored OVER 80 dreams to reality for the special education school "The CAM SCHOOL", 75 fire department children and a community with 22 families for the 3 kings celebrations! Once again we are bringing joy to the less fortunate children in the state of Quintana roo! The 23^rd of December our Santa By surprise program is literally that, we show up with lots of pickup trucks and cars full of toys to the less fortunate areas of town! When we arrive the kids start running and yelling to their friends and family and in no time at all we have thousands of kids surrounding our vehicles awaiting their Christmas surprise! In 2006 you helped put together 27,200 toys.

Just for the record the past four years we have passed out 58,700 presents.

Season’s greetings, well another year has passed and Playa is even larger, over 250,000 people live here now. It is time for our annual Christmas toy drive. This will be the Bomberos 8^th annual Christmas toy drive and with Angel Notion it is our 5^th year. The first three years the presents where only for the Bomberos children, all 15 of them. We received so many toys we stated delivering them to the Colosio. We now have 50 fire Fighters with 75 children. By this time next year we will have 100 Fire Rescue personal. Our new station in Akumal should be done as well as the sub stations in the Ejido & Nic Ta Ha. We have one more fire truck and Ambulance waiting to be shipped from California. I’m asking for your support once again not just the Fire Fighters kids or the Cam school children but the thousands of children that will not have a present if we don’t give it to them. Everyone should be happy at least one time per year. Please help put a smile on someone face that is not as fortunate as you are. Many of you feel the same way as we do that it is to everyone’s best interest to put a little back and to help those who are less fortunate.

Esta es la realidad de nuestros niños. El programa de cardiología pediátrica de Ayuda de los Angeles ha salvado a mas de 100 niños en el estado de Quintana Roo desde 1999. The hard reality is that these children will die if not given surgery, you can come and physically meet and see each child and family evaluate for your self, believe me anything you can do to help save one of them is a huge blessing of a life time.

Meet the Group from MSU

The purpose of the November 2007 project is to identify, assess and document a group of children and adults who have communicative difficulties that are associated with or result from cleft lip and/or cleft palate. From this group of children and adults a subset will be followed in a future project, most likely in March 2008. A group of 10 graduate students from the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders who are enrolled in CSD 823J, "Medical Aspects of Speech-Language Pathology" will be at the Centro de Salud in Nic te Ha. Dr. Peter LaPine will direct and coordinate all aspects of the project. Clinical supervision will be provided by Juile Tobin, M.A., a speech-language pathologist. (Julie has already participated in a previous MSU project with Angel Notion!) As always, the relationship between Michigan State University and Angel Notion brings many benefits to the people of Quintana Roo. This upcoming project will also develop the internet linkage between MSU's main campus in East Lansing and any Angel Notion project, regardless of where that project may be located. The internet link will in the future lead to research and teaching opportunities for MSU faculty and students; it will provide a source of training for young mothers with handicapped children and it will link Centro de Salud with programs and personnel at MSU.

Angel Notion continues to progress and succeed in Playa del Carmen. Together with MSU, Angel Notion achieves its goal: "children become priority, and people like you make a difference."

The Team from Michigan State is coming back to Playa del Carmen! Dr. Peter LaPine and a group of graduate students will return to work with Angel Notion for the 21st project together. See http://www.comdis.msu.edu/ for some additional information.

The group will arrive from the chilly temperatures of Michigan on November 7, 2007. The goals for this project are to identify a pool of persons with cleft lip and/or cleft palate, or significant craniofacial anomalies, that can be seen by future teams. One specific goal is to establish an internet connection via real-time video links between the clinic in Nic te Ha and the main campus of Michigan State University (http://www.msu.edu/). Another goal of the November visit is to continue to develop and secure the research opportunities in the Yucatan that were begun in the Playa/MSU Summit in May 2007.

Angel Notion Update August 2007

Back in to action!

Thanks to all of you who participated in the fund raisers, prayer circles, community support for ME! So you all know, I was whisked away to have a laser surgery in the end of May, I ended up at the Mayo clinic for open spine surgery June 12^th with Dr. Lyons the head of Neurosurgery (not what I expected). I have to tell all of you that this was an AMAZING surgery! It felt like I was in and out in a matter of hours with a 6 week recovery. I feel better than I have in years and now have a huge passion for people living in pain; the pain was excruciating and endless. I am now pain free and so thankful for each and every one of you and your endless support to me and the organization thru this difficult time.

In the mean time, much has been accomplished with the organization and the clinic.

The clinic continues to serve the community. We have over 23 doctors and specialists serving as volunteers in the clinic Monday thru Friday. There continues to be a steady flow of medical teams/missions from the US (we are always looking for more to come). We are very involved with diabetes issues and preventative care, diagnosing women’s cancer and providing treatment, stress and muscular relief, counseling for abused women and children, pediatrics, dental and orthodontics, optical and vision therapy, just to mention a few. We have served more than 100,000 people in less than 4 years! Again, this is only able to happen with your support!

Our goal is community health and education offering services not yet available to any of us in the state of Quintana Roo. 5 children’s lives were saved!

Remember the fundraisers we held January thru April?

It all started after our successful Christmas and three king’s celebration in the Riviera Maya. 14 children were diagnosed with heart problems, Dr. Kirk Milhoan, and his team returned to Playa del Carmen for the 2^nd time in 5 months. Their medical team saw hundreds of children whose parents felt they needed an examination. We held this mission in the Angel Notion clinic serving Playa and Cancun, as well in the middle of the Mayan Jungle.

Thanks to all of our Angel Notion sponsors and supporters! We have literally saved 5 children’s lives. The price to save one of these little angels only cost 15,000.00. It seems so little compared to the impact that is made on an entire family who is only lacking money to save their child’s life. It seems so unfair, but with our program we work together – parents, the clinic, the medical team, the events and radio programs and you! We completed this mission with community support. Thanks to Xcaret, Calica, coco bongo, Nabors of Mexico, Santa Rosa Cristus Children’s Hospital, Dr. Jorge Salazar, Samantha Stepelton, Edali and her team in San Antonio, The Ronald Mc Donald House, American Airlines, Red Eye of Mexico city and Paris Delanes tye dye sky and everyone else who helped us to save lives.

Angel Notion Update March 2007

The fundraising concerts in February were a big success, thanks to Paris Delane and the late Paul Delay! Enough funds were raised to sponsor four children who desperately need open-heart surgery (at 13,500 usd per child!). These kids will be flying to Texas as soon as we get a confirmed date from Dr. Jorge Salazar and the Santa Rosa Children’s hospital.
Our immediate needs for this mission are:
1. Two children are still in urgent need of funding for open heart surgery
2. We need Spanish/English translators with US visas (or US passport holders) who can travel with the children to San Antonio, Texas at the end of March or the beginning of April, 2007. These translators will assist mothers/kids during the time of surgery and healing. Depending on each child’s recovery, it is a 7 day, all-expense paid trip. This is a great way for a patient and caring person to get involved in their community.

Angel Notion’s goal has always been to help at least one child every day, and in the nine years we have existed, we have met and exceeded those goals. To date, Angel Notion has helped thousands of sick and needy people. For the past couple of years, Angel Notion has had a mission to build a cardiology center for babies that are born with heart defects; however our goals have recently expanded to include a cardiology center that will help both children and adults. Heart attacks have become the number 2 killer in the state of Quintana Roo, with the number one killer being diabetes. Christmas was a huge success we literally started with nothing that turned in to trees that turned into incredible volunterism that came from all around the world. 22,670 toys were donated by locals and tourist alike 10 thousand toys were purchased from a comany in cancun. Our tree and containers on the 5th ave were placed at Paseo del carmen, burbon street, tequilla barrel,la Vagabunda, cueva del chango and wall mart. We collected 16,000 dollars! Fantastic! My goal was to make a few kids smile and did we ever. Paamul volunteers, my staff at the clinic,Susan of Latido de mexico, Alejandra of the clinic Sanar, Sam of Portland oregon, SANTA !!!! Ya hoo you did fantastic THANKS A MILLION!

Angel Notion and Los Bomberos de la Riveria Maya (Fire dept. of Playa del Carmen) are proud to announce that we are celebrating our 4th annual “A Gift from your heart,” which provides gifts to children for Christmas and Three Kings Day (January 6th). This year we are focused on collecting toys, non-perishable food, blankets, and monetary donations for those in our community who, without our program, wouldn’t have a Christmas at all. We are pleased to say that this year, we will have FOUR gift tree locations where you can learn more about Angel Notion and the Bomberos, choose a child’s “wish” off the tree, or make your donation.

Inauguration: On Friday the 8th of December at 12:00 pm at the Paseo de Carmen shopping mall, help us celebrate the spirit of giving. You can come and drop off your toys, blankets, food and donations there, or at any of the other Gift Tree locations, and watch the pile grow every day.
All the trees will be accepting donations from 12 noon to 10pm from December 8th through the 5th of January, except for the tree at La Vagabunda, which will be accepting donations from 8am to 2pm.

Where:
The Tequila Barrel: 5th ave between 10th and 12th. Making dreams come true for 180 children from the CAM school (Centro de atencion multiple). Adopt a child with special needs by making their “wish” come true. Each child has written a letter to Santa as a decoration on the tree. See what it feels like to be Santa Claus by making a child’s dream come true! Everyone is invited to the school’s Christmas party on December 20th. Ask at the gift tree for more details.

Burbon Street: 5th ave between 8th y 6th. Making dreams come true for 160 Children of our fire fighters in Playa, Tulum and Cozumel. Adopt a firefighter’s child by making their “wish” come true. Each child has written a letter to Santa as a decoration on the tree. See what it feels like to be Santa Claus by making a child’s dream come true. Everyone is invited to the Bomberos’ Christmas party on December 19th at the Fire House!

La Vagabunda: 5th ave between 26th and 28th .This tree is dedicated to 80 people over 70 years of age who are in need of blankets, food and other needs. Adopt a grandma or grandpa and make their wish come true. Everyone is invited to the party on December 23rd.

Paseo del Carmen: 30,000 toys will be collected by December 23rd for Santa by Surprise program, which visits the neediest communities in the area to surprise children with gifts. Santa by Surprise will take place on December 23rd at 7:30 am and you’re invited! Meet at the park in front of the Municipal Building between calles 10 y 8th on 15th avenue.

Cuevo del Chango: Collection of toys for Santa by Surprise: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through December 22.

All Funding will go to reach our goal of 30,000 gifts for the Santa by Surprise program!
Any additional funding will go to sponsor 6 children from the Angel Notion clinic who are waiting for life saving open heart surgery at a cost of $13,500.00 dollars.

I was asked to write something and all I can think of is Thank You to all of you who live here and those of you who come to vacation or just pass a warm winter with us. I have lived all over this world, but never any place for 12 years. I must say that Playa del Carmen and the community we have is like nothing I have ever experienced. We are a collection of nationalities and our community has proven its value over and over. Remember, just this time last year we were recovering from two hurricanes! Our local businesses, county officials and our amazing locals had us open by Christmas. It gives Lavonna and me great pride to have two foundations that are so well supported by our local population and businesses. Our mission this year is to have a door opened that all of you who ever wished you had gotten involved in the holidays can walk in and give your time to help us raise the funds to make this town an even better place to live and work. by making this Christmas very special for our children. Sponsor the Cam school The Centro de atencion multiple- Playa del Carmen 100 children who attend the local school for disabilities. (If you haven’t been you should present your self. calle 38 y 40th 7am til 11:00 am directora Isabel Morales.) Party to be held the 20th of December with Santa at 4pm at the school.

80 children of Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, children of the 67 Fire fighters (Bomberos) in the municipal will receive their special wish from Santa.

80 people over the age of 60 who live in Playa Del Carmen and surrounding areas will receive assist and support. Each person will receive a package of food, toiletries and other necessities.

Santa by Surprise December 23rd! We travel to several Mayan communities surprising them with gifts for the children. Tickets can be purchased for 200.00 peso to experience giving up close and personal with transportation included!

Funding will also go to Santa Rosa Cristus hospital for life saving open heart surgeries for 12 children in the state of Quintana roo. Each surgery has a cost of has a cost of 13,500.00 USD.

Funding will also go to Support our new medical clinic focused on women’s uterine and breast cancers issues and general surgeries from surgeons from all around the world attending to those in the community who have little to no options for medical care.

Are you coming for Christmas? We need you! Our goal this year is to raise 50k for the Playa del Carmen Fire department and The angelnotion Christmas program. Dreams to reality ..suenos a realidad. November 6-10th
Dorthy malone-rising will bring a team of 6 from vermont for the 3rd year in a row. This mission will be held and supported by the city of cozumel,DIF, and local hotels and restaurants.The focus is on diabetes education for local advocates. The will take an 18 hour certified course bases on nutrician, detection and treatment.
Rosy Pirez our angelnotion representative will care for all the logistics and manage this mission.
A way to participate, bring diabetes detection strips as a donation or make a donation to purchase these strips 1.00 a piece in Playa or Cozumel. www.angelnotion.org

November 6th 7th and 8th

Dr. Juan and Dr Sandra Romero Gynocology whom are volunteers in the angelnotion clinic.
In this mission we have 3 people from personel from the nic te ha clinic who will assit Dr. Juan andDr. Sandra Romero serve close to 500 women in detection of breast and ovarian cancers , std's caring for the women of Cozumel, Giving treatment, diganosis and in most cases the first check up for most women due to cultural beliefs .

Grant Meyer- Orthopedic orthodics for kids www.ortho4kids.com
This mission will be held in the angelnotion clinic we will serve 250-500 kids in the community that need to have special made shoes(braces, inserts). we have aprox.100 children who have previously been given orthodics and we will see them and determing what the next step is in the corrections that need to be made. We expect to see 200-400 new children who are in need.
Grant meyers has an incredible design for these orthodics that have been making a difference for children all over the world for many year.

Mission Fixing broken hearts happend this past weekend Look at what we did!
Dr. Jorge Salazar our pediatric cardiologist who volunteered his time to operate on 4 children in two days.... along with the playa del carmen team! Good going!
Dr. Kirk Milhoun a pediatric cardiologist (www.heartsandsoul.org) saw 45 children with probable heart problems, 10 were diganosed with urgent need for either catherization or open heart surgeries... With your help and donations these 10 kids can be saved from dying. Our cost with santa rosa cristus hospital is 12,000.00 per child... isnt a little life worth so much more than that! Thanks to all of you who made this huge difference in his life.... he isnt smiling because it literally hurts to smile right now, but he is shining in side.

The Fedewa family and the team in Lancing and E. Lancing was absoulty out standing. Thanks to all of you who participated in changing moises point of view, from seeing snow for the first time to the colors of fall, the Zoo, the Msu library... the love he received he will never forget! Thanks again... below are some photos we took during.. please know that with out you, our mission of making the difference would have never been possible with out everyones involvement!

Moise is getting ready to have the change of his life. Dr.George Poletes of East Lancing Michigan a giving person, Surgeon and one of the best in the Mid West has Agreed to surgically repair Moises Naris Bifida a type of Bifida that you are born with.

Moise is a wonderful young man age 22 he currently works in pamul at the famous steak house. This surgery will change his life, and we as angelnotion are dedicated to helping Moise with what he will need to make the changes that he will confront. we need your assistance please assist by making a monitary donation. We will need room and board, airline tickets, food and clothes expenses. Moise will be accompanied by Dr. Salazar of Playa del carmen who is also a plastic surgeon who will be learning from world renoun Dr.s and giving men!
We need your help in covering the 2 month worth of expenses. We now have over 2000.00 dollars see the list of people in Pamuul Mexico who have donated to change this young mans life. We have a goal of 5000.00.

Dr. Porisch has arranged a way to assist Angelnotion in completing two of the 10 children on the heart list. Santa Rosa Cristus is sponsoring two kids at a donation total 20.000.00
These surgeries are scheduled for the 11th of June. We are needing assistance for the basic costs of the airline tickets(aa miles are welcome). Funding for food and Ronald Mc donald house and transportation for the families in san antonio.

Valerie was released from the hospital on her way to a new life

Valerie Update May 28, 2006

We have been in a whirlwind with this little Angel. We have learned a lot from Valerie and her mother Alejandra. Her mother is very young, uneducated, poor economically but rich in heart & character. She is a mother who has struggled to care for a child in the best way that she knew how with the resources she has available to her. At first glance we thought that Valerie was a child that was being neglected. We were shocked thinking how could a mother let her child starve? In retrospect we now understand that as we work with families and go into their homes we have to learn to assess situations not from our own eyes, our life experiences, our sense of reality but instead we must gain an understanding of the full picture before making a judgment. A valuable lesson learned.

Going through this experience step by step with Valerie and Alejandra over the past months we have gained a whole new respect and compassion for Alejandra. We now know that she is a mother who always wanted to do the best she could for her child. In order to keep her daughter alive Alejandra has fed her hours & hours each day literally slowly squeezing milk from a bottle into her mouth to keep her from aspirating. Test results and information from the doctors indicate that despite her malnourished state Alejandra had kept Valerie healthy enough to live. It was a wake up call for us in the first days that Valerie was here watching the effort that it took for her mom to feed her by bottle up to four hours to give her an 8 ounce bottle of formula. Alejandra has shared with us the struggles that she has gone through as a young mother with a child with a severe physical disability living in unimaginable conditions with little to no resources available to her. Alejandra was given no options for treatment for her daughter. She was given advice on how to continue trying to feed her daughter and had been told by some that she should take her daughter home to die. Can you imagine?

The quality of life that Valerie and Alejandra can now lead will be so much better. Valerie has responded very well to her medical treatment and she is getting stronger day by day. She is quite the little fighter. She is now being pump fed directly into her stomach through a gastric feeding tube. She went through the surgery well and has responded well to the feedings. She was released from the hospital and is recovering at the Ronald Mc Donald house. Alejandra has done an excellent job of learning about the care her requires daughter and is very confident learning new skills. The changes in Valerie in just a short time with increased nutrition have been amazing to watch. She is bright eyed and responsive. She enjoys music, cartoons, listening to books and having her dolls with her. She uses vocalizations to “talk” and will let you know when she is not happy with something! She is definitely a strong little girl!

What does the future hold?

Medical Issues:
All medical studies are not in yet. Early studies indicate the possibility that Valerie contracted a virus before birth that caused brain damage & premature birth. Her diagnosis falls under the umbrella of cerebral palsy. Our sole focus right now is on improving Valerie’s health nutritionally. She will have follow up appointments this week to check her progress. She has been released to return home to Mexico to continue to gain strength before secondary medical issues can be addressed. Valerie’s pediatrician in Houston will continue to coordinate her care along with her local pediatrician in Cozumel.

Improvement of Home Environment:
Rosy Pirez of Angel Notion will be going back to Cozumel to begin preparing the home & family for Valerie’s return. We have plans of how to improve their current home environment to meet Valerie’s needs. Plans include providing proper bedding, positioning equipment, ventilation / air conditioning, nutritional & personal care supplies. Rosy will work with the family on how to create and maintain a clean, healthy environment for Valerie. We will work with the family on ways to provide stimulation for Valerie and include her in their family life.

Currently Alejandra & Valerie live in a small roof top shack made of scrap materials on top of her parent’s home. Her house is literally made of ping pong tables and scrap wood along with cardboard boxes. This little home and a newer home that the family was beginning to build on a small piece of family owned land were both damaged during the recent hurricane Wilma. We need your help in building the family a safe, permanent home. The home will be built in coordination with family members and volunteers and will cost under 10 K to construct. Help us to reach this goal!

Transportation:
Alejandra can no longer leave Valerie at home alone, she will have to get assistance for in home care and she will need a safe way to transport Valerie to medical appointments, school and therapy appointments.

Education:
Alejandra has demonstrated her ability to care for her daughter, has a great capacity to learning and she desires to work with Angel Notion and Carrie’s Heart educating and supporting other families in her community who are going through similar situations. Work that we have done on the island has shown that there is great need there. In March we identified 11 other children whom are severely disabled in the community and whose families are in need of resources and education. We know that these families are just the beginning…we have only just begun to scratch the surface. Alejandra has grown a lot and she has a lot of information that she can now share with other families. Alejandra now has hope and is beginning to make plans for her future. Help us to support Alejandra in meeting her goals by sponsoring her continued education and internship with Angel Notion. We would like to find a sponsor to cover her internship pay of 200.00 a month.

It takes a village:
Alejandra is becoming a super star mother and Valerie is surprising us daily. We look forward to watching Valerie’s health improve over the coming months and years. We all took a leap of faith coming together to work to save the life of Valerie. It has taken the hard work and dedication of many to get us through this first step in Valerie’s care and recovery. We will continue to need this community of support to stay strong and grow so that we can meet all of Valerie’s medical needs and our goals for this family. We are given these missions to assist others UNCONDITIONALLY for this very reason - making a difference one child at a time!

In its ongoing mission to make a difference in its community, Angel Notion relies completely upon the generosity of spirit of its benefactors and volunteers. At Angel Notion’s Centro de Salud clinic, office volunteers work 6 days a week, and 10 area doctors, specialists, and therapists also work without pay to help hundreds of people monthly. This clinic, which uses both traditional and alternative methods, was created to give options to thousands of people living in Playa del Carmen who, because of financial or educational insolvency, are without other medical options. While Angel Notion fundraising efforts are often focused on extreme cases, the fact is that without continuous, regular support, the clinic cannot function.

Behind every medical “case” is a flesh-and-blood person with hopes and dreams that parallel your own. Here are just a few of their stories:

Moise is 20 years old and is originally from an impoverished native Maya region. He now works for Kalus restaurant in Paamul. Moise was born with nose bifida, which in an appearance-conscious society has proved to be a difficult disability to live with. Unlike some other birth defects which can be camouflaged, Moise’s disability is literally as plain as the nose on his face. Angel Notion has arranged for him to go to Michigan at the end of May to be seen by Dr. George Polets at Sparrow Hospital, but we still need to raise another 5, 000 usd to enable his Mexican doctor, Dr. Jorge Salazar, to accompany and translate for Moise. Moise is so overjoyed at the prospect of the difference this will make in his life that he has phoned the Angel Notion clinic countless times to thank the staff and promise that he will live the rest of his life in gratitude. Moise will make a difference for others in the same way that others have made a difference for him.

Together with US charity Carrie’s Heart, Valerie, the 8 year old child with cerebral palsy whom we found in very bad shape on the island of Cozumel last month, has been transported via continental airlines to the Texas children’s hospital in Houston, where her long road to health is just beginning. We anticipate that we will need over 15,000 usd to help this child, and to date, we have raised only about half of that amount. This case is special for us, as we are focused not just on rehabilitating Valerie, but on helping her mother, Alejandra, to gain self-esteem and to learn how to properly care for her daughter. Any parent of a child with cerebral palsy or other severe disability will tell you how difficult it can be to care for a special- needs child…now imagine how hard it must have been for Alejandra, who is uneducated and poor and who lives in a country in which there is very little information or infrastructure to help her. Quintana Roo has the highest number of cases of cerebral palsy in all of Mexico, due to complications during birth.

Leslie Pinto of Cozumel needs 10,000 usd to complete her funding for open heart surgery in San Antonio’s Santa Rosa Cristus hospital. Leslie Pinto is the final child on the list for open heart surgery from our 2005 Fixing Broken Hearts mission. Her parents have waited patiently and have watched all of the other children go through their surgeries and recoveries, and have witnessed the amazing changes in these children’s health. Now their greatest wish is that their daughter also be saved. The clock continues to tick, however, and without this surgery, Leslie will run out of time. Please help save Leslie.

It is difficult to fathom that here in Playa del Carmen, so many lives are cut short from illnesses or disabilities that can be easily fixed in wealthier or more developed nations. Thanks to our Angel Notion angels, we have done our level best to defy the odds and have saved more than 15 young lives this year alone.

Valerie and her mother arrived in Houston May 6th 2006. We were picked up by carrie and Paige of carriesheart. Upon arrival Paige and Carrie had welcome baskets with almost everthing you can imagine , from shampoos to candles and lotions.

Valerie Update:

Lavonna Redman of Angel Notion was in town last week working on Valerie's case. Lavonna found a local pediatrician who has a huge heart for children with disabilities and has agreed to see Valerie and guide us through her care. There is a team of doctors awaiting Valerie’s arrival, we will have every kind of specialist that will be needed to diagnose and treat Valerie in the most successful way.

We plan to have Valerie in Houston as early as this coming Friday

We have come to the decision that in order for us to truly help Valerie long term, we must also help her mother. Valerie's mother, Alexandra, will be coming to Houston with Valerie to take part in getting her the medical care that she needs. Most importantly, she will be here to learn to accept, love and care for her child. Our goal is to surround Alexandra with a community of support that will guide her in making positive changes in her life for herself and her daughter.

Can you imagine living in the conditions that she has to live in? There are no options, no assistance and no education. I personally can imagine being very tired, with out hope or really anything to look forward to. Angel Notion and Carrie's Heart, along with you and other volunteers, are going to give her mother the self esteem and all the tools to be able to handle this job that she has been given. Our vision is that Alexandra will have the experience to be able to teach others in her community what one needs to do in the case their child is born with a disability. I see that Alexandra may have the capacity to hold a job with Angel Notion in a new clinic in Cozumel dedicated to children with severe disabilities. Mothers like Alexandra will assist others in their community who are in similar circumstances. There is great need on the island of Cozumel - children are being born everyday with difficult circumstances on the Island!

The scope of the Valerie Project has broadened. Both Angel Notion and Carrie's Heart operate under the principles of love, acceptance and above all education. It is important that Valerie's mother learns to love and care for her child so that she can return home and share her knowledge with other mothers. The larger goal of the Valerie Project is one of education - educating parents and communities about the rights and needs of their children. Education combined with resources to help families in the care of their children is the way to truly making a difference in each child's life and in the local community.

NEEDS:

Our needs are funding for the Ronald Mc Donald house, air and local transportation, medical costs (which we expect to be approx 10k), needs for Valerie include warm clothes, a stroller, nutritional supplement, personal care products, diapers. For Valerie’s mother - clothes, shoes, personal hygiene items, counseling / therapy costs (approx 1000.00). We have raised about 45% of what we need in order to complete this mission. We expect this particular mission will cost approx 15,000.00 dollars… not a lot consider we are changing an Island, a family and most importantly Valerie’s life!

I will tell you why I am so interested in your project. My daughter, Sarah passed away this weekend. Please read the attached, and you will understand. Sarah was born without arms and legs, but lived a great life for 28 plus years, married and happy in New York City. Sarah was a fighter as you will see below.

My heart goes out to you for what you do. I am sure you feelings are the same as mine when you lose one of your children.

Services for Sarah Hoffman Snyder will be held at 2 p.m. April 22 at St. Matthias Episcopal Church, 3301 St. Matthias Drive in Shreveport.

Sarah Hoffman Snyder, born with no arms and limited lower extremities yet a champion for those with disabilities, fooled a lot of people in her life, including her own mom.

"Who would have thought that someone with such an immense physical disability would be able to fly as far as she flew, to travel as many miles as she did, to be as capable as she was? Certainly not her mother," said Mary Ellen Hoffman of her daughter, who as a C.E. Byrd student received one of only six national 1994 Special Achievement Awards for her help of the disabled.

Surrounded by much of her immediate family, Snyder, 27, died Sunday in New York City of complications from liver failure. She had been hospitalized a week and had been in intensive care for two days, her mother said.

Snyder had lived in New York since 2001, when she married Jason Joseph Snyder, at the time a member of the U.S. Navy and stationed in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

"I think so many people (in Shreveport) played a role in Sarah being able to be who she was," Hoffman said. "They were touched by Sarah, and she was touched by them. She's gone, but we want everybody to remember the remarkable things she had the courage to be. She had virtually no limbs; it says a lot that she had the courage to face each day."

By age 15, she'd already shared more than 2,000 hours of herself at Schumpert Medical Center as a Junior Volunteer. As a Byrd senior in the fall of 1995, she wrote a Letter to the Editor of The Times questioning why the new two-story Science Technology building at her school had no elevator.

"We have a mayor in a wheelchair (Shreveport's Bo Williams), the Americans with Disabilities Act and 12 disabled students enrolled at Byrd," she wrote, "and all we got was the shaft."

"She was so independent," said Melanie Samuel, now a Byrd office employee who was the "child-specific aid" for Snyder for three and a half of the teen's four years at Byrd.

"That was just a title because she really didn't need me. Her support system was so great, half of the time I didn't know where she was," Samuel said. "She was normal. She was just normal. She got into trouble, she did the same things any other kid would do. And once she got the swing of it, that was it: she didn't really need me. She's unforgettable."

"She'd say things from the back seat of the car like, 'Scoot the seat up, mama; I don't have enough leg room,'" Hoffman said. "She was funny, curious, personable. She had the same dreams as other people; she just had limits and had to learn how to get around them ...

"Now she's limitless. She's not tethered to this Earth by any of the things that held her ... she's soaring. Her fight is over."
